How the program debates

Lower Columbia College’s Fighting Smelt combine IPDA public debate with individual speaking events, interpretation, and public-address competition. Students can earn academic credit through competitive speaking and intercollegiate debate courses, while LCC students in good standing may participate without enrolling for credit. The team practices during fall, winter, and spring quarters, and prospective members can contact the Director of Forensics through the team page. In the 2026 Clark and Rae Peters Invitational, the Fighting Smelt placed second in overall team sweepstakes and were the top community-college program; the published IPDA results list the Fighting Smelt among teams in the debate division.
