Michigan Debate

Michigan Debate is the University of Michigan’s varsity collegiate debate program, with national competition, Detroit outreach, campus tournaments, and summer institutes. The team won its second consecutive American Debate Association National Championship in 2026.

How the program debates

Michigan Debate is a varsity traveling program within the University of Michigan’s Student Life division. Team members compete nationally, and the wider program includes Detroit urban debate outreach, campus tournament hosting, and summer debate institutes. The university’s Student Programs page directs interested students to the Michigan Debate site to learn how to join the varsity team.

The program reports first-place and elimination-round finishes at the University of Kentucky tournament held September 26–28, 2026. Tabroom identifies the event’s Open division as CEDA policy debate for 2026–27 and lists the tournament on the NDT-CEDA and American Debate Association circuits. In March 2026, the University of Michigan reported that its team won the ADA National Championship for a second straight year.
