Springfield has always been a city of Pioneer-Valley civics and basketball-birthplace culture. The Springfield Debate Club gives that tradition a venue: structured debates, motions sourced from local interest and global headlines, and a community that takes ideas seriously without taking themselves too seriously. New members welcome, including first-time debaters.
These are planning targets. Read the current details before making travel or attendance plans.
Education
Schools could gain from a steady new source of money. The other side argues the revenue should repair streets, parks and public safety first.
Transit
Fast, frequent trains could connect Western Massachusetts to jobs in the east. Critics question the cost and how many people would ride.
Transit
Taking down the highway could open the riverfront to people and new homes. Opponents say it would snarl traffic for commuters and trucks.
Civic life
Supporters point to recent investment in the region. Others argue that decisions made in Boston still leave the west behind.
Culture
The city has a story no other place can tell. The other side says tourism alone will not build a strong economy and Springfield should invest elsewhere.
Meetings, venues and how to reach the organizers appear on the club calendar.
