SUPERDEBATE VS PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE

The accessible alternative to British Parliamentary debate

What is Parliamentary Debate?

Parliamentary debate is an extemporaneous format modeled on legislative debate. The most common version, British Parliamentary (BP), used at the university World Championships, puts four two-person teams in a single round — two supporting the motion and two opposing.

Motions are announced about 15 minutes before the round with no pre-gathered evidence, so it rewards quick thinking. But it also asks you to learn parliamentary roles (Prime Minister, Whip, extensions), points-of-information etiquette, and a four-team ranking system — and it lives almost entirely on the university circuit.

SuperDebate keeps the extemporaneous heart of parliamentary and removes the procedure, so anyone can start on night one.

The SuperDebate Format

1

Constructive

Build and present your original arguments. Make your case clearly and persuasively.

2

Cross-Examination

Question your opponent. Clarify positions and expose weaknesses in their arguments.

3

Rebuttal

Respond to your opponent's arguments and reinforce your own. Deliver your closing.

That's it. Three speech types, infinitely configurable. From 18-minute quick rounds to 60+ minute deep dives.

Why SuperDebate Works for Everyone

Think on your feet, kept

Parliamentary is loved for extemporaneous, no-evidence debating. SuperDebate keeps exactly that energy.

No roles to memorize

Skip Prime Minister, Whip, and extension speeches. Simple constructive → cross-ex → rebuttal you learn in one night.

Two sides, not four teams

BP ranks four teams against each other, which confuses newcomers. SuperDebate is a clean head-to-head.

Built for adults

Parliamentary lives on the university circuit. SuperDebate is a real league for adults, in any city and online.

Still zero evidence prep

Like parliamentary, you argue from reasoning — no cards, no files. Topics land at the event.

Clear way to win

Universal scoring criteria and written judge feedback, instead of opaque four-team rankings and speaker points.
